Somerset County resident Ken Kaplan, a partner in a corporate law firm, is very familiar with how stress impacts the body. Three years ago, he learned first-hand about how spending an hour or more in a ‘float tank’ could relieve his stress. He also began understanding the origins of that stress within his own mind.
“I immediately noticed that floating was much different than any relaxation method I had ever tried,” said Kaplan, a Bridgewater resident. “The relaxation stayed with me after the float and it was as if my stress level got turned way down. I noticed these benefits practically from my first float, but I also noticed that the benefits were cumulative as I continued to float.”
As Kaplan continued to appreciate the benefits, his dream was to open a float center.
In early November, Kaplan’s dream became a reality when he opened Quantum Floats in Bedminster.
“I spent almost two years looking at properties,” he said. “I looked at many towns in northern and central New Jersey. I wanted to find a town that is close to where I live and work,” he said. “My family has lived in Bridgewater for more than 25 years. We love the area and the community. My law practice is in Morristown and I have developed great relationships there as well. Bedminster is a great town for the float center. It is easily accessible to the communities where I have roots. It has a diverse vibrant community and the town is welcoming and supports its local businesses.”
Essentially, the session is spending an hour or so lying quietly in the dark, suspended in a warm solution of Epsom salt, about 10 inches deep, and so dense that one float effortlessly. “In the gravity free environment the body balances and heals internally as the senses are rested,” Kaplan said.
Quantum has three private tank rooms. Each has its own shower. The tanks are over 8 feet long and over 4 feet tall and are filtered continuously. The client can open and close the tank door at any time, explained Kaplan, but the greatest benefits from a session are when the door is closed and external sensory stimulation is limited as much as possible.
Additionally, he said floating is used widely in the treatment of stress, anxiety and to improve concentration and creativity.

“Floating offers busy people an amazing way to slow down and recharge,” Kaplan said. “Without distractions from light, sound, gravity or temperature, our clients are able to relax, both body and mind, and have extra mental circuitry for all kinds of creative and problem-solving endeavors.”
Katie Leiher of Parsippany loved her floating experience.
“Floating allows me to be completely outside my body and thoughts,” she said, “bringing me a sense of ease and bliss I rarely experience in my day-to-day life. In addition to the physical relaxation, I love the clarity that comes after a floating session. It’s like hitting the pause button and allowing all the rapid fire thoughts to melt away.”
Kaplan noted that certain people are not candidates to float.
“We recommend that people do not float if they had their hair colored within 48 hours,” Kaplan said. “Also, people who have had hair straightening treatment (e.g. with keratin) and extensions should not float because Epson salt disrupts the treatment. People should also be able to get themselves in and out of the tank safely.”
The cost is $70 for an hourly float. A variety of packages and specials also are available, There are special discounts for students, military personnel and veterans, as well as first responders – police, fire, and EMT.
Quantum Floats is open seven days a week, including evenings.
Kaplan intends to be a resource to the community.
“We also offer seminars, consulting services and facilitated retreats for individuals and businesses that are interested in finding lasting solutions to their stress and frustration,” he said, “resulting in improved relationships and success in businesses.”
