SIOUX FALLS, SD – Marcus VanLiere has added a new therapy to his health regimen. He’s suiting up to float away his stress.
“I kind of got into meditating,” VanLiere said.
In addition to yoga, the Sioux Falls man uses flotation therapy. He hops into a tank filled with ten inches of water and 1000 pounds of Epsom salt.
“The human mind is capable of things we’re not aware of and quieting it and looking within is something we don’t do these days,” VanLiere said.
The room is lightproof and soundproof, and the water is heated to the same temperature as your skin. That means you’re in total darkness, total silence and can’t feel the water around you.
“By depriving your body of light, sound and feel, your body relaxes,” Spa 2000 Owner Colette Munce said.
Colette Munce owns Spa 2000, where they just started using flotation therapy. While it’s new to Sioux Falls, it is a growing trend across the country.
“It’s really good for back pain and muscle tension,” Munce said.
Research has shown that the sessions can also have a positive impact on your blood pressure and increase blood flow throughout the body.
“An hour in the flotation tank is equivalent to four hours of restful sleep,” Munce said.
The water is more dense than the Dead Sea. That’s why you can float on top without any effort.
“You’re in a zero gravitational environment. You can’t find that anywhere on Earth,” VanLiere said. “It completely renews your body and your mind.”

For those who cannot handle confined spaces, an open float room is coming to Sioux Falls soon.
Sheri Roelfsema with Radiance Day Spa says her business will offer a larger float room with an open design. She said couples will also be able to use a float room designed for two people. Both are expected to be available in the coming weeks.
